Did you know taking a COVID vaccine can make you a whole lot richer? Yes, that's exactly what is happening in US' Michigan.
A woman in Michigan won the $2 million grand prize in the final round of drawings of the COVID-19 vaccine sweepstakes that provided a financial incentive for people to get vaccinated.
Christine Duval is now $2 million richer, the Protect Michigan Commission announced on Monday, while also naming the nine young other people who were awarded college scholarships and the last round of $50,000 daily winners, NPR reported.
The grand prize winner told NPR she and her family would use the money toward helping pay for her children's educations, remodelling their home and donating money to mental health services in the community.
The money ¡°will help us achieve all of our dreams,¡± she said.
The program, called the "MI Shot to Win Sweepstakes," ran from July 1-30 and included the $2 million grand prize Duval won, a $1 million prize and daily drawings of $50,000 for adults who got at least one shot. There were also chances to win tuition money for kids ages 12 to 17 who got the vaccine.
Michigan¡¯s weekly number of people getting the first shot rose for four straight weeks between July 11 and Aug. 7 before dropping in the past two weeks.
About 65% of Michigan residents ages 16 and older have received at least one dose, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which factors in people who were vaccinated outside the state or at federal veterans affairs, defence and prison facilities. State officials¡¯ goal is 70%, AP reported.
About 55% of those age 12 and older are fully vaccinated, according to the state health department.
