In a surprising turn of events, four US women diplomats left behind their bulletproof cars to travel the streets of Delhi Desi-style with their personalised auto-rickshaws. Ann L. Mason, Ruth Holmberg, Shareen J. Kitterman, and Jennifer Bywaters have taken to driving their pink and black rickshaws around town and even travel in the Tuk-Tuks for official trips.
US Diplomats Embrace Desi-Style Rickshaws
In a conversation with ANI, the ladies talked about learning the automobile and driving through the streets of Delhi. Ann opened up about her wish to sit in an auto-rickshaw and shared, ¡°From Detroit to my auto rickshaw, I've had a lifelong love of vehicles and so everywhere I've been there's been something special about a vehicle, but really none more special in my opinion than an autorickshaw. When I was in Pakistan, before coming to India, I was in armoured vehicles and they were big, beautiful vehicles. But I would always look out on the street, and I would see the autorickshaws going by and I always wanted to be in the autorickshaw. So when I got to India and had the opportunity to buy one, I took it immediately.¡±
She also shared that learning to drive a rickshaw was tough, as she had only driven automatic cars before in her life and had never known how to use a clutch in a vehicle. What¡¯s extraordinary about these women with auto-rickshaws is not just the vehicles but also the modifications they have added to a classic Delhi auto. Ann¡¯s personalised black rickshaw has a Bluetooth attachment and a printed curtain of a tiger to embellish the vehicle.

She was born in Karnataka but holds US citizenship. She adorned both sides of her car with flower magnets and colourful tassels.Like a classic Desi auto, she has stuck stickers of the US and Indian flags together on her windshield.
Ruth Holmberg also takes out her black rickshaw to go to markets and meet people. She told the outlet, "I enjoy driving the auto very much and I love it when other women see that I am driving it and I like that they see this possibility for them as well." After meeting Ann, Jennifer Bywaters got inspired to have a rickshaw of her own. She shared that through riding the unusual vehicle, she got to see the good side of people in Delhi and got much-needed help from people whenever necessary.
