Pahalgam attack: Pakistani actor Fawad Khan¡¯s Abir Gulaal faces boycott, film federation say ¡®no release¡¯, Dia Mirza backs him
Fawad Khan¡¯s Bollywood comeback, Abir Gulaal, is under fire following the tragic Pahalgam terror attack. With film bodies and political parties calling for a ban on Pakistani artists, the film¡¯s fate in India hangs in the balance. Meanwhile, actress Dia Mirza has publicly backed Fawad, urging art to unite, not divide.

Bollywood¡¯s getting a whole lot more dramatic, and not just onscreen. Fawad Khan¡¯s big Hindi film comeback, Abir Gulaal, might have a juicy storyline, but the real chaos is happening off camera. Following the Pahalgam terror attack that left 26 innocent tourists dead, India¡¯s film federations are not having any of it.
Is the Fawad Khan-starrer Abir Gulal canceled after the Pahalgam attack?
Just weeks ahead of its May 9 release, Abir Gulaal is caught in a political tornado, and the main villain in the eyes of several film bodies? Fawad Khan, yep, the heartthrob from Kapoor & Sons. And let¡¯s just say, subtlety has left the chat.
What does the film federation say about boycotting Fawad Khan¡¯s film?
Ashoke Pandit, head of the Indian Film & Television Directors' Association, went full savage mode, expressing outrage that any Indian production would even consider working with Pakistani artists post-attack. According to insiders, Pandit compared the situation to betrayal, saying people only care when tragedy hits their own homes. The Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) doubled down, warning that Abir Gulaal will not see the light of day in India if it features any Pakistani actors.
Adding more masala to the mix, MNS, aka the party that banned Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, declared it is ready to bin the movie (and not metaphorically). MNS Cinema Wing President Ameya Khopkar apparently warned those who support Pakistani actors to be ready for consequences.
Dia Mirza supports Fawad Khan
But just when it felt like this was going to be a one-sided takedown, enter Dia Mirza, Bollywood¡¯s resident peace ambassador. While talking to News18 Showsha she reportedly shared that she is excited to see Fawad Khan back on the big screen and hopes his return will reignite creative exchanges between Indian and Pakistani artists. According to sources, Dia emphasised that art should not be collateral damage in political warfare. And she¡¯s not alone, many fans on social media agree.
(Note: This interview with Dia Mirza was recorded before the unfortunate terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu & Kashmir. Her statements are unrelated to the recent incident and should not be seen as a reaction to it.)
Fawad Khan reacts to the Pahalgam attack
Meanwhile, Fawad Khan himself has remained dignified amid the noise. After the Pahalgam tragedy, he posted a heartfelt condolence message, expressing sorrow and solidarity with the victims¡¯ families.

Directed by Aarti S Bagdi, Abir Gulaal stars Vaani Kapoor opposite Fawad and is backed by Indian Stories, A Richer Lens, and Aarjay Pictures. Now, will the film release as planned or end up another casualty of political drama? Bollywood¡¯s on edge, and we are too.
