Bruhat Soma, a 12-year-old Indian-American seventh-grade student from Florida, won the Scripps National Spelling Bee by accurately spelling 29 terms in the tiebreaker, extending the small ethnic community's domination in the prestigious competition. Bruhat won the Scripps National Spelling Bee on Thursday, winning over $50,000 in cash and other awards.
Who did the 12 YO defeat to win the spelling bee?
This year's battle came down to a tiebreaker, with Bruhat spelling 29 words properly in 90 seconds, defeating Faizan Zaki, who correctly spelt 20 words in the lightning round.
What was the winning word?
"Abseil" is described as "descent in mountaineering by means of a rope looped over a projection above." Bruhat went first in the tiebreaker, and after 30 words, he appeared to be unbeatable.
Faizan's speed was more erratic at the start. He tried 25 words but flubbed four of them. ¡°Bruhat Soma rules the word! The winner of the 2024 Scripps National Spelling Bee! "The boy with the unbelievable memory doesn't miss a word all week and wins the Scripps Cup!" the organisers said.
The two final spellers each had 90 seconds to spell as many words as they could from a predefined list of words while the other speller was secluded.
How did the organisers react to the win?
Adam Symson, president and CEO of The E W Scripps Company, presented Bruhat with the championship trophy. "At just 12 years old, Bruhat impressed with his display of knowledge and composure," Symson stated.
It was Bruhat's third time competing in the Scripps National Spelling Bee. He finished tied for 74th in 2023 and 163rd in 2022.
