What did the two Dutch designers innovate?
Mango peels are typically thrown away as waste, but two Dutch designers have revolutionised sustainability by turning them into leather.
In a widely circulated video, two Dutch designers showed off an inventive process for turning mango skins into leather.
By collecting the seeds and pureeing the fruit rather than discarding them, mangoes¡ªwhich are typically dumped in the trash¡ªcan be saved from turning into waste.
Who posted the viral video?
The person going by the handle 'sambentley' shared the video. "This leather isn't made from cows!" he wrote as a description for his Instagram image.
Could you distinguish between them? He continued his explanation by stating that Fruitleather Rotterdam was established by two Dutch designers, Koen Meerkerk and Hugo de Boon, to battle food waste and help the environment in the long run.
Natural additives are added to the material to reinforce and enhance its protective qualities. The puree is then distributed evenly, allowed to dry into sheets, protected with a gloss, and embossed to mimic genuine leather.
Why are these designers using fruits?
Fruit leather boasts properties like complete waterproofing and is used to produce watch straps, handbags, and shoes.
It is made entirely of natural ingredients. Conversely, the manufacture of conventional leather discharges harmful chemicals into the environment, damaging water supplies and endangering the health of locals and labourers.
How is mango a good substitute for leather?
Mango-based fruit leather is one substitute that reduces food waste and improves environmental safety. By reducing the environmental effects of traditional leather manufacturing, this innovative approach offers hope for a more sustainable and safe future. Watch the viral video below.
