Work Smart, Not Hard: Google Techie Who Works 1 Hour A Day Reportedly Earns Rs 1.2 Crore A Year

In an intriguing revelation, a young software engineer in their twenties employed by Google has disclosed that they dedicate just one hour per day to their work while still reaping a handsome annual salary of $150,000 (approximately Rs 1.2 crore).

Adding to the intrigue, this tech-savvy individual, who goes by the pseudonym Devon, has received a sign-in bonus and anticipates a year-end reward, as Fortune details.

At the same time, his job involves writing code for Google's tools and products. But Devon hadn't started using his laptop when the interview reached him after 10 am.

When asked if he worries about missing messages from his manager, Devon mentioned that if he ever does, "it¡¯s not the end of the world --I¡¯ll just get back to it later tonight."

Devon explained his work approach with the publication that he kickstarted his week by coding a significant portion of a task before passing it on to his manager.

According to him, this approach "basically guarantees" a smoother workflow for the rest of the week.

As per Fortune, 97 percent of Google employees regard it as an excellent workplace, unlike only 57 percent of employees in a typical US company who feel the same.

Google is renowned for its array of perks, including its quirky campus, complimentary meals, and competitive salaries.

Having previously interned at Google, Devon knew he wouldn't need much effort once he secured the job. It wasn't a matter of avoiding work but instead of consciously downplaying his efficiency.

During his internship, he managed to complete all his coding tasks ahead of schedule, granting him the opportunity for a week-long trip to Hawaii.

"If I wanted to work long hours, I'd be at a startup," he explained to Fortune.

"Most people choose Google because of the work-life balance and benefits. You could work at Apple, but Apple has such fan appeal to software engineers. They work long hours..., but at Google, most people know what they're doing is a job."

Devon claims to be among the many software engineers who openly acknowledge that they are compensated for relatively light workloads.

During a business upswing in the early stages of the pandemic, industry giants such as Meta, Google, and Salesforce were aggressively recruiting in anticipation of continued growth, as The Wall Street Journal reported.

This "penning" trend involved tech giants stockpiling employees even if their roles weren't immediately necessary. According to Devon's account to Fortune, this is precisely what happened at Google.

The company's leaders were actively acquiring talent to prevent them from joining competing firms and developing products that could challenge Google's offerings.
