However, it is traditionally associated with harvesting rabi crops.

Lohri is a festival synonymous with bonfire lighting, traditional meal, song and dance, but it is celebrated to thank the sun deity and mother earth for a good harvest.

Why is Lohri celebrated?

There are many stories associated with Lohri, but the most popular folklore associated with Lohri is that of legend Dulla Bhatti. Dulla Bhatti was a man who had lived in Punjab during the reign of Mughal Emperor Akbar. Like Robin Hood, Dulla Bhatti used to rob the rich and help the needy. He even saved a girl from the kidnappers and took care of her like his daughter. On her wedding day, he even performed the rituals in the absence of a priest. People loved him and respected him, and began to sing the folk song "Sundar-Mundriye" every year on the occasion of Lohri. How we celebrate Lohri

Lohri is one of the most important festivals in India and preparations start a few days before the festival. But when it's a new family member's first Lohri, the preparations and celebrations must be grand. Whether it's a new bride or a newborn in the family, family members make sure to make their first Lohri a memorable one.

The main attraction of this festival is a huge bonfire, which is lit, and friends, family, relatives and neighbours all get together, sing and perform bhangra and gidda and have fun around it. There are many customs and rituals associated with Lohri; On this day, people gather around the bonfire and offer fire oblations as a way of thanking God. They offer sesame seeds, jaggery, rewari, popcorn, corn seeds as prasad by putting it in the fire while going around the bonfire. They also pray for good health and prosperity.

The first Lohri of a new bride in the family is considered very special. The newly married woman wears a bright new outfit on the occasion of Lohri. She also wears bracelets and applies henna ( Mehendi ) to her hands. The new bride also receives many gifts, clothes and jewellery from her in-laws, friends and family.

A baby brings happiness, love, and warmth to a family, so naturally, their firsts should be special and memorable! If this is a baby's first Lohri in the family, the new parents and other family members make sure to make their first Lohri unforgettable. The baby and his mother are dressed in their best for the party; the new mother is then asked to sit down with the baby in her arms. Friends and family then donate fruit, candy, clothing, jewellery, and other gifts to mother and baby.
