In This Karnataka Village, People Dig Graves & Make Corpses Drink Water Hoping For Rain
The people of Kalakeri village in Karnataka's Vijayapura district dug open graves and pumped water into the corpses' mouths to bring rain.
In many parts of the world, people practise praying to the 'rain gods' just so that their area could get rain during droughts. In many parts of rural India people even marry animals just so that they might get rain. All these rituals are mostly based on superstitions.
Villagers pour water into the mouths of corpses
But people in the Kalakeri village in Karnataka are going above and beyond these kiddish superstitions. They have a league of their own. To bring rain and appease the "rain gods", the people of this village dig graves and pour water in the mouths of corpses.
Karnataka has received an abundant amount of rain. Some areas were even affected by landslides and floods due to excessive rain. However, weirdly the Kalakeri village did not receive a single drop of rain. This is when the entire villagers got worried, gathered and discussed this ¡°curse" upon them. Someone from the group suggested that they should pour water into corpses¡¯ mouths and everyone agreed.
According to News18, the villagers gathered and listed out all the people who died in the last month and went to their graveyard. Since the family members were aware of the locations of these graveyards, it was easy to locate everyone. Then a hole around two feet deep was dug to the side where the head of the corpses was laid and a water pipe was inserted. Water from a tanker was then released into the grave.
This process was repeated on 25 corpses. However, when the last corpse was done, it started to drizzle. This made people's trust in this ritual a little higher.
Origin of this curse
A small village with about 1,500 people, Kalakeri village has always received very less rain. But the reason behind this unusual ritual started years ago. Many years ago, an old man died in the village with his mouth wide open. He was buried without anyone closing his mouth. That year, a severe drought and famine struck the village and people suffered.
When the elders contacted an astrologer for this, he said that the dead corpse was thirsty. This is when the villagers dug the grave and made the corpse drink water. It coincidentally started to rain afterwards.
After this incident, whenever the village faces drought or doesn't receive rain, the villagers follow this ritual.
