The 104-year-old Valayanchirangara Government Lower Primary School will now have girls coming for classes in knee-length shorts. For girls the outfit is tailored to facilitate more flexibility and comfort a huge relief for the students who play sports.
In a bid to challenge the notion that girls can only wear skirts or salwar kameez, a Kerala government has introduced gender neutral uniform.
The school named Valayanchirangara Government Lower Primary School will now have girls coming for classes in knee-length shorts.
The break in tradition in the 104-year-old school was a welcome move by parents and students alike. For girls, the outfit is tailored to facilitate more flexibility and comfort, a huge relief for the students who play sports.
"This is particularly convenient for girls who can play easily now,¡± Raji C, Headmistress of the school told The Hindu.
According to reports, the gender-neutral uniforms were introduced for students of the pre-primary section in 2018 as a trial.
¡°We were initially worried about the reaction from parents who might want their girls to continue wearing skirts. But most parents have welcomed the idea,¡± she added.
This school which is run by all-women staff, including the teachers and principal, aims to challenge the age-old gender based bias in school uniforms.
