With Aam Aadmi Party's clean sweep in Punjab assembly elections, the Congress party is down to its worst performance having been left in power in just two states on its own (Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan) and as a junior ally in Jharkhand and Maharashtra.
Arvind Kejriwal's Aam Aadmi Party has swept Punjab, garnering over 92 seats, the best-ever performance by any party in the state. The Aam Aadmi Party has won 92 seats out of the 117 seats in Punjab Assembly, followed by Congress (18) and Shiromani Akali Dal (3).
The AAP win in Punjab will be the party's first victory in the state and a marked improvement from its performance in the 2017 elections when it had finished second behind Congress which went into the polls this time, battling factionalism and anti-incumbency.
In his victory speech, Arvind Kejriwal said, ¡°You might think ¡®what can common do. Do you know who defeated the incumbent CM Charanjit Singh Channi? Labh Singh Ugoke, who works in a mobile repair shop. Labh Singh Ugoke¡¯s mother is a Safai Karamchari in a government school and his father works on a farm. Such a person has defeated Channi today. We have an ordinary AAP volunteer Jeevan Jyot Kaur who defeated both Sidhu and Bikram Singh Majithia. There is great power in the common people. If you challenge the common people, big people will be dethroned like this.¡±
