The Secret Service Agents who make up the security team which protects the president, are like real-life ninjas. A former US president, Abraham Lincoln, actually founded the Secret Service on the day he was assassinated, but it wasn't until years later that they took up the job of protecting the POTUS.

Today, they protect the 45th President of the United States in Washington and everywhere else in the world he decides to set his foot in. Here are some of the most interesting facts about how the agents function.

1. No alone time for the President.

The Secret Service Agents never, and we mean never, leave the President's side. From his trips to the golf course in Florida to visiting a medical facility, the armed guards are always accompanying the President.

2. The agents reach destinations way before the President is on his way

The Secret Service Agents make a trip to wherever the President has to visit three months before the POTUS has to get there. They meet up with the local law enforcement agencies so that they could work out the dynamics and logistics of the trip.

Along with that, they have to scoop out nearby trauma centers in case there is a medical emergency involving the President. In order to determine that, they do a motorcade across the city so that they can streamline the required places.

Not just that, they also secure safe locations for the President in the event of an attack or any other emergency.

3. Always prepared for emergencies with blood bags on the move.

The Secret Service Agents always a carry a bag of the President's blood type to avoid any delay and side-step any non-availability issues, if there's ever a medical emergency. In fact, the Presidential Protection Division, the branch of the Secret Service responsible for protecting the lives of the president and his family are trained in 'ten-minute medicine' so that they POTUS is kept alive till medical experts arrive on the scene. To make sure that the medics don't take too long, the POTUS is never more than ten minutes away from a medical facility.

An agent is placed in each and every nearby hospital, and their job is to coordinate with the medics in case of an emergency.

4. POTUS' limousine is customised to another level.

The Secret Service is responsible for the hardcore modifications that are made to the limousine that the President travels in. The obviously armored-vehicle is flat-tire proof and bulletproof. The agents who are responsible for driving it are specially trained in defensive training so much that they can make a 180-degree turn with absolute ease. They are trained to do that in order to escape a roadblock or an explosion that could damage the vehicle.

5. Not just Air Force One, the Agents fly a back-up plane.

Whenever the President travels, he takes the Air Force One, the most sophisticated jet in the world. However, that is not the only plane that takes flight during his journey. The agents fly another plane to a secret location in case something happens to the OG airplane. In fact, according to Mental Floss, at least seven airplanes fly with the POTUS which are responsible to transport cargo such as helicopters, limousines and other equipment. They also consist of hundreds of Agents and other staff members.

6. Nothing goes inside the President's mouth without the Secret Service Agents' watchful eye.

The President's food is of utmost importance to the agents, with them keeping an eye on each and every action of the kitchen staff in the White House. Nothing goes unnoticed by them and they are even known to 'stare down' staff members to make sure that nobody poisons the President's food.

7. The Agents choose the hotel, not the POTUS.

The President does not have the freedom to stay in the hotel of his own choice. The Agents are responsible in deciding that. They even take up entire floors above and below the President's room.

They run thorough background checks on the hotel's employees and if anybody is found with a criminal record, they are asked not to come in till the President is staying there.

8. Not just human agents, the Secret Service also has dog-agents guarding the President.

Before the President reaches his destination, sniffer dogs are taken to the venue to sniff out any bombs that could have been placed in and around the area.

9. The President cannot call the Secret Service off, even if he wants to.

The President does not hold the power to refuse the Secret Service Security for himself or his family. The calls regarding his security are made entirely by the agents and even though he is thought to be the most powerful man in the world, his opinion on the same does not matter.
