I remember that time switching to high school and finally being allowed to use pens. At that point in time, it seemed like an achievement that had no parallel.

The pen wasn't just a writing tool, it was a gaming console, too. You can't define the 90s school life without playing a game of 'pen fight', 'thumb fight' and 'red hands' with their gang. The pen that survived the assault would be called the king.
You don't write such scripts anymore. The 90s was special. While pen was a high value asset, it was often robbed from its rightful owner. We stole pens, that was our real life Money Heist. The issue as petty as it may seem, was the reason for many scuffles. 'Pen zindagi hai', many would exclaim.
Every pen stolen would be brought to justice, that was rarely served.
While the 90s might be history, people aren't letting go of the wistful affection towards the pens. Many people on reddit are reminiscing the good, old days and sharing their tales of using the pens, that formed a solid part of the childhood.
You can't fathom how important these pens were for a 90s kid, they have a whole childhood written all over them. While time might have passed, we sure can live with these memories.
