The first session of drafting the Constitution of India which was led by Dr. BR Ambedkar held on December 9, 1946, and attended by 207 members, including nine women. The committee got rid of about 2,400 amendments while debating and deliberating the constitution, out of nearly 7,600 amendments tabled. The constitution was adopted on November 26, 1949, during its last session and came to effect two months later on January 26, 1950.

Independence Day was celebrated on 26 January until independence on 15 August 1947. In order to give importance to the date of declaration of Purna Swaraj on 26 January 1930, the constitution was implemented on 26 January 1950 and 26 January was declared as Republic Day.
