Shark Tank's Anupam Mittal takes a dig at Sam Altman's 'hopeless' remark on India's AI future: 'Glad somebody made him less smug'
Shark Tank India judge Anupam Mittal has responded to OpenAI CEO Sam Altman's 2023 comment dismissing India's potential in AI, calling out his overconfidence. Mittal's post hints at China's success with DeepSeek, an AI chatbot competing with OpenAI's ChatGPT at a fraction of the cost.
Sam Altman faced criticism in India after his old remark dismissing the ability of underfunded Indian companies to compete with US firms on foundational systems went viral. Now, Shark Tank India judge Anupam Mittal has responded to the viral video¡ªand he's not holding back.
People Group founder Anupam Mittal has reignited the debate on India's AI potential by calling out OpenAI CEO Sam Altman's past dismissal of the country's ability to compete in foundational AI development.
Altman, in a 2023 interview, was asked whether a team of smart engineers from India, with a $10 million budget instead of $100 million, could build something substantial in AI.
His response was blunt: "We're gonna tell you it's totally hopeless to compete with us on training foundation models, you shouldn't try¡ªand it's your job to try anyway."

Doubling down, he added, "I think it is pretty hopeless, but¡ª"
Talking about the resurfaced clip on X (formerly Twitter), Mittal wrote: "It is completely hopeless to compete with us" ¡ª @sama's words to India in 2023. While ?? hasn't done it yet, am glad somebody made him less smug. Apna time bhi aayega ??."

Mittal's post hints at China's AI strides, in the wake of the success of DeepSeek, a startup that developed a chatbot rivalling OpenAI's ChatGPT at a fraction of the cost.
