Shri Krishna Janmashtami is celebrated on the Ashtami date of Krishna Paksha of Bhadrapada month which usually falls during August or September. According to the beliefs of Hinduism, Lord Krishna was born on this day. Shri Krishna was born in Rohini Nakshatra on the Ashtami date. On this day Krishna's birth anniversary is celebrated with great enthusiasm in Mathura and Vrindavan. Like Rakshabandhan this year, there is confusion regarding the date of Krishna Janmashtami. People have not yet been able to know clearly whether Shri Krishna Janmashtami is on 18th August or 19th August.

Astrologers say that this year the Ashtami date of Krishna Paksha of Bhadrapada will start from 9:20 pm on 18th August and will last till 10:59 pm on 19th August. Meanwhile, the Krishna Janmashtami will be celebrated on Thursday, August 18. On this day the devotees of Lord Krishna observe fast and go to the temple and worship him.

Ashtami Tithi - begins at 09:20 pm on Thursday, August 18, and ends at 10:59 pm on Friday, August 19.

Rohini Nakshatra - begins at 01:53 am on Saturday, August 20, and ends at 04:40 am on Sunday, August 21.

History of Janmashtami

Lord Krishna was born in Mathura at midnight on Ashtami in the months of August to September. He was born in King Kansa's (Who was his maternal uncle) dungeons because his parents Devaki and Vasudeva were in prison where Kansa already killed off their first six children soon after they were born and was waiting for their eighth son to be born so he could kill him because not only he wanted to be invincible but also immortal. According to believers, Devaki and Vasudeva's seventh son Balram's foetus mystically transferred from DevakiĄ¯s womb to Vasudeva's first wife, Rohini, in Gokul, and when their eighth child Krishna was born then Vasudeva rescued them by crossing the river Yamuna and handed him over to the Nanda and Yashoda who was living in Vrindavan to raise his son as his own.

However, Kansa came to know that the child was in a neighbouring village and made many attempts to kill Krishan by sending his allies (demons and demonesses) but none of them succeeded. In the end, as Krishna grew he returned to Mathura and annihilated his uncle Kansa. Krishna, who loved butter and is known as Makhan Chor (Butter Thief) as he was very famous for stealing and was a prankster, grew up in Vrindavan and later played an important role in Mahabarata.

According to legends, Shri Krishna is one of the most powerful human incarnations of Lord Vishnu. The holy festival of Janmashtami is celebrated with great enthusiasm by Hindus across India. On this occasion, special events are organized in the temples of Lord Krishna and devotees pray until midnight to celebrate the birth of God. Some devotees even observe a full-day fast. On the occasion of Krishna Janmashtami, not just homes but temples across the country too are beautifully decorated with lights, diyas, and flowers.

Krishna Janmashtami is the most important day for the devotees of Lord Krishna. On this occasion, devotees decorate their homes and place idols of Lord Krishna in the form of a child. Devotees perform various events of Lord Krishna's life and act to show his undying love for Radha. An idol of Lord Krishna in child form is placed in a swing and every member of the family gives him butter and sugar. Devotees break their fast after offering all the dishes to Lord Krishna.
