The incident occurred on November 15 during IIT Bhilai's annual fest, Mirage, organised by the student council.
The event was attended by families, professors, and other dignitaries, which heightened the controversy.
Things came to a halt when a member of the organising committee stepped on stage to ask Rathi to end his set and leave.
The fallout was swift, with youth political wings like the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha, National Students' Union of India, Karni Sena, and others filing complaints against Rathi.
The police, too, have launched an inquiry, with Durg SP Jitendra Shukla confirming that action will be taken under charges of public obscenity.
IIT Bhilai's administration has also ordered an internal probe to determine how Rathi was invited and approved as a performer.
Director Rajiv Prakash has expressed concern over the impact of the incident on the institute's reputation and has constituted a three-member faculty committee for a thorough investigation.
Reports suggest that Rathi's set transitioned from English to Hindi, laced with expletives and inappropriate jokes, prompting many in the audience¡ªespecially families¡ªto leave the venue.
Notably, this isn't the comedian's first brush with controversy. Earlier this year, Rathi faced legal action in Dehradun for allegedly making objectionable comments about Lord Ram during a show.
