"The dust storms affecting central western New South Wales are a direct consequence of two years of drought and greatly diminished vegetative cover on the soil surface," the CNET quoted Stephen Cattle, a soil scientist at the University of Sydney, as saying.
He also explained that these large rolling storms have been seen frequently after periods of drought.
Downpours over the past few days have provided relief for parts of drought-stricken NSW and helped firefighters slow the spread of bushfires and build containment lines before increased fire danger mid-week.
