What is Friendship Marriage?
According to the South China Morning Post (SCMP), the country's youth perceive cohabiting relationships based on shared values and interests as a viable alternative to traditional weddings.

¡°Friendship marriage is like finding a roommate with similar interests,¡± said an individual living in a friendship marriage for three years to SCMP.
¡°I¡¯m not suited to be someone¡¯s girlfriend, but I can be a good friend. I only wanted someone with similar tastes to do things we both enjoy, to chat and laugh with,¡± another said to the outlet.
How does this relationship work?
The site said that this arrangement is not the same as marrying your best buddy. Instead, under this system, people gather and spend time together to get to know one another better.

According to the outlet, the pair also decides on various tiny but significant aspects of the family they intend to construct, such as how to split money, divide household responsibilities, and even manage refrigerator space.
Despite appearing unromantic, such chats have helped over 80% of couples in this sort of relationship live happily together, according to Colorus, an agency that claims to be the first in Japan to specialize in friendship marriage. According to the service, many of these couples opt to have children.
