Video Of Elephant Being Assaulted By Its Mahout In Tamil Nadu Causes Outrage

The video was originally shared on Monday by Indian Administrative Service officer Awanish Sharan, on his Twitter handle. The IAS officer termed the two men, beating the miserable elephant, as devils.
The footage has been viewed by over 145k users on Twitter as netizens condemned the incident. The tweet was quote tweeted by Indian Forest Officer Parveen Kaswan on Monday who said that the two men have been booked by the authorities for thrashing the elephant at rejuvenation camp.

As per a report by The New Indian Express, the incident took place in Tamil Nadu's Thekkampatti where the elephant was inside the 48-day annual rejuvenation camp. The video shows the two men brutally beating the animal that was tied as they continued to hit his legs.
The incident is even more shocking considering the fact that it took place at a rejuvenation camp where animals are sent to be nurtured back to good health.
The report said that the mahout Vinil Kumar and his assistant Siva Prasath have been booked under sections of the Wildlife Protection Act. Vinil has also been suspended by the Srivilliputhur Nachiyar Thirukovil temple administration. While Siva Prasath was never an employee of the temple. The news report identified the elephant as Jeymalyatha of the Srivilliputhur Nachiyar Thirukovil.

It's just sickening and heartbreaking at the same time. There has to be an end to such inhuman acts. This can't go on like this and only making big claims on putting a stop to animal cruelty won't do any good unless there is proper plan to tackle the menace.
