Abandoned Shiba Inu Named Deng Deng Gets Auctioned & Sells For Rs 18 Lakh In China
Deng Deng became a celebrity Shiba Inu dog in China after its sad story of abandonment came out in public. His parent failed to collect him despite multiple appeals by court.
An abandoned dog that has become an internet sensation in China has been sold in a marathon online auction for 160,000 yuan ($25,000) i.e. Rs 18 lakhs.
The dog, which is of Shiba Inu breed, is called Deng Deng. Around seven years ago, the animal had been left at a pet training centre and his owner never returned. After the owner could not be located, a court in Beijing ordered the eight-year-old dog to be put up for auction.
The online bidding process generated enormous interest and Deng Deng was sold for 320 times the initial asking price of $78.

Although the auction was supposed to last for 24 hours, it got extended by five hours. The auction attracted 480 bidders and over 166,000 views.
Deng Deng became a darling of the Chinese public in 2018 when local newspapers including the Beijing Youth Daily reported that it had been left by its owner at a pet school with unpaid fees. A court then agreed to auction the dog off on behalf of the school where Deng Deng has been living.
The Shiba Inu is an agile, small- to medium-sized hunting dog with short fur and a fox-like face.
Livestreaming sales have grown popular during the pandemic as Chinese consumers stay home due to the draconian control measures the government has used to curb outbreaks.
