Hot Cuppa With A Pinch Of Salt? US And UK 'Battle It Out' Over The Correct Way To Make Tea
An American scientist's recent claim that Britain's preferred brew required a dash of salt may have triggered a 'Twitter war' between the two G7 countries. It all started when the scientist said he had discovered the recipe for the ideal cup of tea.
An American scientist's recent claim that Britain's preferred brew required a dash of salt may have triggered a 'Twitter war' between the two G7 countries. It all started when the scientist said he had discovered the recipe for the ideal cup of tea. For those who haven't caught on yet, it's all in good fun. Here's what went on.
Who shared the 'outrageous' tea recipe?
Michelle Francl, a chemistry professor at Bryn Mawr College, said that the secret behind the perfect cuppa was a pinch of salt and aggressive squeezing of the tea bag.
"You get some awful cups of tea in the United States. People here frequently take lukewarm water directly from the tap. It's terrifying," said Francl, who examined scientific papers and historical manuscripts dating back over 1,000 years and documented her findings in her new book, Steeped: The Chemistry of Tea.
What did the US embassy say?
The US embassy said that the disputed recipe for a perfect cup of tea had "landed our special bond with the United Kingdom in hot water" and suggested that the claim itself should be taken with a heavy pinch of salt.
The embassy wrote on X that because tea was ¡°the elixir of camaraderie, a sacred bond that unites our nations, we cannot stand idly by as such an outrageous proposal threatens the very foundation of our Special Relationship."

How did the debate conclude?
The post solemnly reassured a terrified country: ¡°We want to ensure the good people of the UK that the unthinkable notion of adding salt to Britain¡¯s national drink is not official United States policy. And never will be.¡±
However, the tweet has put worried Britons in a state of anxiety. Referring to another explosive moment in the nations' relationship, when an American woman claimed on TikTok that tea could be made in a microwave, the article concluded with the solemn promise: "The US embassy will continue to make tea in the proper way - by microwaving it."
