Not US Or UK! Employees In India Are Most Scared About Losing Their Jobs To AI, Reveals Survey

At a time when the debate about AI (artificial intelligence) being a boon or bane doesn't seem to have a definite answer, one thing is clear - it has managed to create a fear of job loss among people.

And its the employees in India that are most scared, as per a recent survey.

Indian employees are more stressed about losing their jobs to artificial intelligence (AI) than their counterparts in the US, UK and Germany, according to a study. At least one in two Indian employees is worried about losing their jobs to AI compared to one in three in developed countries, according to the findings of Randstad work monitor quarterly pulse survey, ET reported.

Why Indian Employees Are Most Scared?

Among the reasons for the increased concern among Indian employees is the presence of a large workforce in BPOs and KPOs, which are particularly vulnerable to AI automation, and high rate of AI adoption in the country, said Viswanath P.S., managing director and CEO at Randstad India.

"There are a lot of KPOs and BPOs in India where employees work on several operational tasks that AI can potentially take over. We must also consider that AI adoption in India is among the fastest in the world," he said.

"These employees must be thinking about future-proofing their careers through continuous learning, as they prepare for potentially unexpected AI interventions," he said.

The Q3 2023 Randstad work monitor edition focuses on workers' skilling demands and AI. The survey covered 1606 respondents across India, out of which 55% were male and 45% female.

How Is AI Impacting Our Jobs?

Seven in 10 respondents believed AI will impact their industry and roles. A similar number of respondents recognised the relevance of upskilling as they believe that upskilling of tech skills will be essential in their roles over the next five years.

The survey found that the majority employees are already using AI in their current jobs, and only 6% have not received any AI training in the last 12 months. Artificial intelligence remains the most sought-after areas of development (according to 30% respondents), followed by IT and technological literacy (28%); management and leadership skills (27%).

Half of the respondents said they would leave their jobs if their employer did not offer any learning and development opportunities in the next 12 months, the report mentioned.

Which Sector's Employees Are The Most Worried?

The study also revealed that flexible work arrangements continue to be the top priority for Gen X (26%) while for boomers (27%) focus is more on pay/remuneration. Larger number of employees in the automotive/aerospace industry are worried about the impact of AI in their jobs followed by those in food product manufacturing, IT services and financial services.
