World's First AI Software Engineer 'Devin'
Devin is expected to completely transform the way code is developed, debugged, and implemented. As the AI assistant Devin can transform a basic prompt into a working website or software program, it is being heralded as the first AI of its kind in history.
The startup asserts that its AI assistant has completed actual jobs on Upwork, passed real-world engineering interviews with top AI companies, and is the new state-of-the-art on the SWE-bench coding benchmark.
SWE-bench is an assessment framework that includes 2,294 software engineering problems taken from real GitHub issues and the pull requests associated with those issues from 12 well-known Python repositories.

What All Does Devin Do?
Let¡¯s dive into the capabilities of Devin:
Who is Devin?
Devin is an assistant for software development who does more than just finish and suggest code. Devin can independently manage the whole process of creating and releasing complete software applications, in contrast to large language models (LLMs) like Google's Gemini or OpenAI's ChatGPT.
With its own code editor, command line, and browser, Devin works autonomously, methodically putting software into practice by segmenting work into manageable steps.
What can Devin do?
Devin is capable of organizing and carrying out intricate engineering projects with thousands of choices. It absorbs lessons from its past, remembers pertinent details, and even corrects its own errors. Devin shows off the system's capability to quickly resolve errors by adding a print statement when they arise in a demonstration provided by the company.
Programmers can identify the exact location of a problem in their code by using the print statement, a line of code that outputs messages to the console. Devin and the user can also actively work together. It takes user feedback, provides real-time progress reports, and collaborates with the user on design decisions as needed.
After reading an article, the AI assistant can also pick up new technologies fast. With the help of research repository instructions, it can even train and refine large language models.
What about Devin's performance?
It outperformed rivals like Anthropic's Claude 2 at 4.8 percent and GPT-4 at 1.8 percent with an astounding 13.86 percent issue resolution rate.
Who Are The Investors In The Startup Which Built Devin?
The AI startup Cognition, founded by Walden Yan, Steven Hao, and Scott Wu, has raised $21 million in a Series A funding round led by Founders Fund, Peter Thiel's venture capital firm. Among the other investors are Sarah Guo, the founder of Conviction Ventures, and Elad Gil, a former Twitter executive.
With gold medals from the International Olympiad for Informatics, all ten members of the founding team have experience working at the forefront of applied AI, having held positions at companies such as Cursor, Scale AI, Lunchclub, Modal, Google DeepMind, Waymo, and Nuro.
