Officials have issued an urgent warning against people travelling to the United Kingdom and Africa over the spread of a virus called 'Bleeding Eyes Virus' that has already killed 15 people so far. Know about the virus, symptoms and treatments
After a long fight with the deadly COVID-19 virus, an urgent warning has been issued against the spread of a new virus, also called the ¡®Bleeding Eye¡¯ virus, affecting over 17 countries across the globe.
The real names of the viruses are said to be the Marburg, Mpox, and Oropouche viruses which are spread across 17 countries. Due to the rapid spread of the virus, travellers have been advised to take additional precautionary measures.
The Marburg virus, due to one of its symptoms, has killed around 15 people in Rwanda, and over 100 people are believed to be infected. Apart from this, it is also said that the virus is the deadliest one ever, as it has a 50-50 risk of death.
Officials fear that the virus could soon be spread across other parts of African countries, along with dealing with other outbreaks.
What is Marburg virus, a.k.a. the ¡®bleeding eyes¡¯ virus?
Marburg virus is a serious condition that is also known as ¡®bleeding eyes¡¯ and is a viral hemorrhagic fever. The fever often damages the blood vessels and causes bleeding. Marburg virus belongs to the Ebola family, according to the Cleveland Clinic.
Symptoms of the virus often start like flu and can progress to severe vomiting, bleeding, and neurological (brain and nerve) problems.
How is the Marburg virus spread?
Marburg virus is a rare disease, but sometimes outbreaks are seen in certain parts of Africa. The outbreaks of the virus commonly start spreading from bats or other animals like monkeys to human beings. From here it can spread to other human beings and cause a major outbreak.
The virus is mainly transmitted through:
- Blood.
- Pee (urine).
- Poop (stool).
- Spit (saliva).
- Human milk.
- Semen.
- Vaginal fluids.
Causes behind the Marburg virus disease
Marburg virus has two related viruses called Marburg virus (MARV) and Ravn virus (RAVV) that cause MVD. These are also related to the viruses that cause Ebola.
Symptoms of Bleeding Eye Virus
Some of the common symptoms of the virus include:
- Fever.
- Chills.
- Severe headache.
- Cough.
- Muscle or joint pain.
- Sore throat.
- Rash.
After a day or two you may feel better, but following this, other symptoms start to show up:
- Abdominal or chest pain.
- Vomiting.
- Diarrhoea.
- Dizziness.
- Unintended weight loss.
- Bloody poop or vomit.
- Bleeding from your nose, mouth, eyes, or vagina.
- Confusion.
Treatment
As per the Cleveland Clinic report, there is no dedicated treatment or cure for the condition yet, but the symptoms can be managed if the condition deteriorates by giving oxygen, intravenous (IV) fluids, and treatments for specific symptoms, like pain medications.
