The narrative of Haider, who comes from a poor family and has been hunting for work for a while, is told in the critically acclaimed Pakistani movie Joyland. He announces to his family that he has been hired as a theater manager. In reality though, Haider is employed by the theater as a dancer. He can't tell his family that he works as an exotic dancer. His world goes upside down when he falls in love with trans woman Biba.
The movie is now set to make its way to OTT!
It will be released on 1st December.
Joyland will release on Mubi India.
Salmaan Peerzada, Ali Junejo, Rasti Farooq, Alina Khan, and Sarwat Gilani are among the actors who appear in the film. The movie's departments are all expertly done, and the performances are fantastic.
The film, which was directed by Saim Sadiq, had a profound effect at Cannes, winning both the Queer Palm Prize and the Jury Prize in the Un Certain Regard section for its moving depiction of LGBTQ+ topics.
On November 18, 2022, Joyland was supposed to be released in Pakistan. The Ministry of Information & Broadcasting in Pakistan was reported to have prohibited the film's domestic release in November, citing Pakistan's Motion Picture Ordinance of 1979 and written complaints about the film, even though the censor board had granted the film a censor certificate in August. Furthermore, the political group Jamaat-e-Islami's Senator Mushtaq Ahmad Khan charged that the movie went "against Pakistani values," saying that it "directly attacks our beliefs by glamorizing transgender people in Pakistan and their romantic relationships."
A representative for Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's office revealed to the Associated Press on November 16, 2022, that a panel established to review the movie authorized its release with some modifications. On November 18, as scheduled, the movie debuted in Pakistan, albeit with several "objectionable erotic" scenes removed from the running order.
Joyland is still prohibited in the province of Punjab.
