The sixth season of "The Crown" is scheduled to be paused "out of respect" for Queen Elizabeth II, the UK's longest-serving queen, who passed away yesterday. Queen Elizabeth II died at the age of 96 at Balmoral Castle in Scotland, after reigning for 70 years.
The Crown creator Peter Morgan told Deadline in an email that the show was more than just her life on screen; it was a "love letter" to Queen Elizabeth.
He stated that ¡°The Crown is a love letter to her and I've nothing to add, for now, just silence and respect. I expect we will stop filming out of respect too.¡±
Morgan has always admired the Queen, so much so that he penned the script for the 2006 film The Queen, which starred Helen Mirren as the queen. Later, in 2016, he decided to develop the web series The Crown, with the first season following a young Elizabeth II and her early days as Queen. Prince Philip was performed by actor Matt Smith.
For seasons three and four of the show, Olivia Colman took over for Foy, who was replaced after two seasons. Tobias Menzies played Prince Philip, while Helena Bonham Carter played Princess Margaret.
The Crown is a period piece about Queen Elizabeth II's reign. The fifth and sixth seasons, which will complete the show, will span the Queen's reign into the twenty-first century.
The popular semi-fictional drama's conclusion after five seasons was already announced by the streaming service. The show's creator, Peter Morgan, changed his mind after realising that a sixth season would be required to accurately depict the breadth and intricacy of the story.
The fifth season of the show, which is set to premiere on Netflix in November of this year, will star Imelda Staunton as Queen Elizabeth.
