I signed up for SonyLiv solely to watch Taraah Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashma. Before you pass judgements, hear me out. When I'm eating, I want something light to binge on, and what is better than TMKOC, where I can be entertained with slapstick comedy??
However, I gradually realised that SonyLiv has more to offer than just TV shows. It has developed new and unique content for its website. SonyLiv has started giving tough competition?to established players such as Netflix and Amazon Prime.
So, do you want to know how SonyLiv, a small streaming video brand, surpassed Netflix and Amazon Prime Video in India?
SonyLIV had only 0.7 million subscribers, a glitchy interface, and revenue of around Rs 300 crore after seven years in business in 2020. Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Disney + Hotstar, and all the brand names that followed were far forward. A relaunch occurred in June 2020. The streaming platform was cheering for Your Honor, Undekhi, and the other new shows.
Scam 1992, directed by Hansal Mehta, was released in October 2020. The show, based on Sucheta Dalal and Debashis Basu's book about the Harshad Mehta stock market scam, became one of the year's biggest hits. It not only brought SonyLIV an estimated 22 million viewers and numerous awards, but it also provided them with the most important thing they needed to beat the giants: subscribers. Tabbar, Gullak, and Rocket Boys were next in line; like the solider in chess, their goal was to gain more subscribers.
SonyLIV garnered 18.2 million subscribers less than two years after it was relaunched.?This makes them India's second-largest subscription-based video-on-demand service after Disney + Hotstar and roughly three times the size of Netflix.
As competition heats up in the $1.7 billion Indian OTT industry, SonyLIV intends to broaden the channel through which viewers can purchase subscriptions, including retail stores with high customer traffic.
The platform intends to disclose the Tamil original series in the subsequent month, accompanied by Malayalam and Telugu creations since it continues to expand into smaller cities and towns and regional markets to gain subscribers.
SonyLiv is in the mood for 'Yeh Dil Mange More,' as they want to continue expanding their business and attract more subscribers through regional content.
