The official synopsis of the film reads, "Thevan, a folk singer of the Paanan caste, has a fateful encounter when escaping slavery, leading to discover an ancient tradition altering his destiny."
One day before the release of Bramayugam, Mammootty's character name was changed after Punjamon Illam, a Brahmin household in Kerala filed a court case against the makers of the film accusing them of defaming the reputation of their family for being involved in evil magic. The name was then changed from Kunjamon to Kodumon.?
