The film tells the story of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, the son of the legendary Maratha king Chhatrapati Shivaji, who takes up the leadership of the Marathas after his father¡¯s death. Despite initial Mughal celebrations, the Marathas continue to resist under Sambhaji. After defeating a lion and seizing a Mughal treasury, Sambhaji faces a large Mughal military campaign led by Emperor Aurangzeb.
Amid political intrigue and betrayal within his own court, Sambhaji uses guerrilla tactics to hold off the Mughal forces. However, he is eventually captured and tortured by Aurangzeb but refuses to surrender. After Sambhaji's execution, his wife, Yesubai, crowns Rajaram as the new leader, continuing the Maratha resistance, which eventually leads to the downfall of the Mughal Empire and the rise of Indian self-rule (Swaraj).
Based on Shivaji Sawant¡¯s Marathi novel Chhava, Chhaava is an AR Rahman musical bankrolled by Dinesh Vijan under Maddock Films.
