Hollywood Filmmaker James Cameron who is known for directing films like Avatar and Titanic has some not-so-good thoughts about the superhero films made particularly by Marvel Studios and DC Entertainment. Netizens aren¡¯t impressed with James' remarks like ¡®their characters act like they are in college¡¯ and ¡®that¡¯s not the way to make movies.¡¯
He said, ¡°I also want to do the thing that other people aren't doing. When I look at these big, spectacular films ¡ª I'm looking at you, Marvel and DC ¡ª it doesn't matter how old the characters are, they all act like they're in college.¡± In earlier social media callouts, some critics had already criticized both franchises for being too shallow, all styles and no substance.
The filmmaker had also confessed his disagreement with how Marvel and DC makers approached cinema. Talking about their films' characters, James said, ¡°They have relationships, but they really don't. They never hang up their spurs because of their kids. The things that really ground us and give us power, love, and a purpose? Those characters don't experience it, and I think that's not the way to make movies.¡±
Marvel Cinematic Universe and DC Extended Universe are known to have produced some of the all-time highest-grossing films over the last decade and a half. Marvel even held the record for the most successful film with Avengers: Endgame, surpassing Cameron¡¯s Avatar, which eventually re-released in 2019 and took its record back.
James¡¯ films are known to be one of the most successful and highest-grossing films of all time. He¡¯s known for his directorial vision and apart from Avatar and Titanic, is known for directing the first two parts of the Terminator series, the 1986 sci-fi classic Aliens, and the action film True Lies.
James¡¯ 2009¡¯s Avatar will see a sequel named Avatar: The Way of Water, releasing this December and some fans felt his explosive statements for Marvel and DC are to create hype for Avatar 2. James who has planned three more sequels to Avatar is widely regarded as one of the most influential filmmakers in mainstream Hollywood.
