Shailputri, in Sanskrit, is the combination of two words - 'Shail' which means mountains and 'Putri' which means daughter. She is the daughter of the Himalayas and the pictorial depiction of Maa Shailputri shows her holding a trident in her right hand and a lotus flower in her left, with a crescent on her forehead. On the 1st day of Navratri 2024 (Prathama), devotees worship Maa Shailputri-the first form of the Hindu goddess Durga. On the first day of Navratri, people do Ghatasthapana or Kalash Sthapana to seek divine blessings from Goddess Durga and decorate their home and worship Goddess Shailputri by following pooja rituals and chant Mantras.

How to establish Kalash Sthapana or Ghatasthapana at home? (Navratri 1st Day Puja Method)

• During Navratri, Ghatasthapana should always be performed at an auspicious time because it is an invocation of Goddess Shakti. If the Kalash is established at the wrong time, it may anger the Mother.
• Clean the area where the Kalash will be installed and sprinkle Ganga water over it. Place the Kalash in the northeast direction, specifically in the northeast corner.
• On the puja platform, spread a red cloth and create an intact octagon. Install a picture of Maa Durga within this octagon.
• Fill the Kalash with water, Ganga water, a coin, roli, turmeric lump, durva, and betel nut. Place five mango leaves in the Kalash and cover it, then position a coconut on top.
• Next, take an earthen pot and fill it with clean soil. Sow some barley grains in the pot and sprinkle water over them. Install the pot on a post.
• Light a lamp and invoke Ganpati, Mata Ji, and the Navagrahas. Then, worship the goddess with due reverence.
• Recite the mantra "Ya Devi Sarvabhuteshu Shakti Rupen Sansthita, Namastesyaye Namastesye Namastesye Namo Namah" and perform Aarti of the Goddess in the morning and evening for all nine days of Navratri.
