After the Indian government, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, highlighted the risks of AI-led misinformation following various incidents involving celebrities like Rashmika and Sara Tendulkar, the authorities are now keen on holding meetings to address the deepfake issue with social media companies.??
On Thursday, Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw chaired a meeting, which was followed by a press address.?
FYI: Deepfakes refer to the use of artificial intelligence (AI) and deep learning technologies to create or manipulate audio-visual content with a high level of realism.?
While addressing the media, Vaishnaw said, "Deep fake has emerged as a new threat in society. We need to take immediate steps. Today, a meeting was held with social media platforms. We've to focus on four aspects-detection, prevention, reporting mechanism of deep fake and awareness needs to be increased."
He announced that the central government would formulate actionable measures in the next 10 days across four pillars to address the issue. These pillars encompass detecting deepfakes, curbing content dissemination, enhancing reporting mechanisms, and raising awareness on the matter.
Note: The government intends to provide companies with a standard operating procedure detailing how they should address deepfakes on their platforms.
