Pepsi is unquestionably one of the world's most popular soft drinks. This 125-year-old beverage was created in 1898 in New Bern, North Carolina, by pharmacist Caleb D. Bradham.?
The drink was once dubbed "Brad's Drink" after its creator. Bradham purchased the moniker "Pepsi Kola" from a local competitor and renamed it to Pepsi-Cola, according to PepsiCo's website.?
In 1961, the drink's name was shortened to Pepsi. According to a Los Angeles Times story, the name Pepsi comes from the Greek word for indigestion or upset stomach, "dyspepsia." Pepsi was initially marketed as a medical drink that relieved dyspepsia.?
Jenny Danzi, senior director at Pepsi, explained the renaming of the drink to Food & Wine: "Bradham changed 'Brad's Drink,' his renowned non-alcoholic digestive made with a blend of kola nuts, sugar, water, caramel, lemon oil, nutmeg, and other ingredients, to 'Pepsi-Cola.'?
He thought the drink was more than just a refreshment, that it helped digestion, and that its name came from the Greek term dyspepsia, which means "indigestion."?
According to one idea, the name "Pepsi" was inspired by the digestive enzyme pepsin. Pepsin, on the other hand, was never used as an ingredient in Pepsi-Cola.?
Pepsi is now primarily advertised as a refreshment soft drink to be used as a complement to meals and snacks. Pepsi is expected to be the second-most valuable soft drink product in the world by 2023.?
In terms of sales, it trails Coca-Cola. Coca-Cola and Pepsi have battled for the same target audience since their inception. Their rivalry has been termed the "Cola Wars."
