In a shocking incident, an 82-year-old woman from Lucknow was killed in an attack by the family's pet dog.
The incident happened in Kaiserbagh locality of the Uttar Pradesh capital on Tuesday, when the victim, identified as Sushila Tripathi was reportedly walking her pets.
Sushila, a retired school teacher was living with her son Amit. The family had two pets a pit bull and a labrador.
On Tuesday her son Amit, who worked as a gym trainer was away when the elderly woman took her dog for a walk on the terrace.
It is still unclear what happened inside the house but Amit was informed by neighbours that they heard the dogs barking and the cries of his mother.
"When we heard the old lady crying for help, we rushed out to their door but it was locked from inside and aunty was lying in a pool of blood. We tried to open the door but it was locked. We immediately informed her son," a neighbour said.
The son rushed back home and with the help of neighbours, took his mother on a two-wheeler to Balrampur hospital from where she was referred to the KGMU trauma centre.
Senior doctors at the trauma centre said that the woman had multiple deep wounds from neck to abdomen and her legs.
The dog had sunk its teeth into the body of the deceased and the abdomen flesh was torn apart.
Senior doctors said they tried their best but could not save the woman who succumbed due to excessive blood loss.
According to neighbours, the two dogs have been with the family for the past three years but never saw them turning hostile.?
"Our team went to the house to check if the family had a license to keep Pit Bull dog as a pet. But because the house was locked it could not be ascertained," Abhinav Verma, a Veterinary Officer at LMC, said.
The officials also said that they don't have information about the whereabouts of the dog and are trying to reach the son about it.
Pit Bull is medium-size, short hair dog, which is considered too ferocious to be kept as a house pet by untrained people.
It is also listed as one of the ¡®dogs bred for fighting' in the UK's Dangerous Dogs Act, 1991, enacted for purposes of public safety.
