A decorated Army veteran, who has been in a state of coma for over eight years, after he was shot in the face by terrorists, has passed away, the Indian Army has said.
Lt Colonel Karanbir Singh Natt from the Territorial Army (TA), died in a Military Hospital in Jalandhar on Saturday.
He has been in a coma since November 2015, after was hit by a bullet in the face during an anti-terror operation in Jammu and Kashmir's Kupwara.
Lt Col. Natt who was the second-in-command (2IC) of the 160 Infantry Battalion TA (Jammu and Kashmir Rifles) was leading a combing operation against terrorists in Haji Naka village Kupwara, when he was shot at by the militants.
Lt. Col. Natt who fought through the pain ensured the safety of three of his fellow soldiers during the the operation.
The officer sustained grievous injuries to his face, particularly the lower jaw, and despite extensive surgeries in Military Hospital Srinagar and Army Research and Referral Hospital New Delhi, he could not be saved.
Lt. Col. Natt had lost the lower half of his face, his tongue was hanging loose and he was unable to lie back, as the tongue would fall back and obstruct his air passage.
A twenty-year veteran of the Indian Army, and a second generation soldier, Lt. Col. Natt was commissioned in 19 GUARDS (Gurdaspur) as Short Service officer in September 1998.
Later, in May 2013, he joined the Territorial Army and was posted with 160 Infantry Battalion TA (H&H) Jammu and Kashmir Rifles.
