The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the District Administration on Tuesday rescued a pregnant woman who was left stranded in ongoing Assam floods with her family in Cachar district.
?“A request was received from a person from Kanakpur Road, Near Radhamadhav Buniyadi Pathshala School, Rangirkhari, Silchar to rescue and evacuate his 9 months pregnant wife which was immediately addressed” Deputy Commissioner, Cachar said in a Tweet.
This comes as the NDRF, SDRF, Indian Army and others are racing against time to reach hundreds of thousands across the state who are stranded due to the floods.
More than 55 lakh people across Assam have been affected due to the flood situation, which continues to worsen.
On Tuesday, the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) said that the death toll in the floods has risen to 89 after seven more fatalities were reported in the past 24 hours.
According to the officials of ASDMA, since April this year, 71 people have been killed by the floods while 17 others lost their lives in landslides.?
The full extent of the damage is yet unclear as 32 districts have been affected by the flood, with many locations being cut off due to the rising waters.
Two rivers - Brahmaputra and Kopili are flowing above the danger level in several places, making it difficult for the rescue team to reach the stranded.
In Barpeta, the worst-hit district alone 12.5 lakh people have been affected, followed by Dhubri (594,708), Darrang (547,421), Nagaon (457,381), and Kamrup (400,214).
The government is operating 1,687 relief camps in 27 districts. Barpeta alone has over 88,000 people living in relief camps.
The bulletin said nearly 60,000 domestic animals have been washed away by floods. Around 2600 houses have been fully or partially damaged. On Tuesday, 3,652 marooned people were rescued across 11 affected districts.
A large part of National Highway-37 in Assam's Morigaon district has now become a shelter home to people who have been forced to leave their homes after the flood waters submerged their houses.
Nearly 2000 people of 7-8 villages near Barkhal area under Jagiroad assembly constituency in the central Assam district are now taking shelter on the National Highway.
The entire area comprising around 10-12 villages was hit by floods two times within a month.
"We are facing massive problems due to flood. The flood hit us two times within a month," said Gopal Raj who is also taking shelter on the National Highway along with his family.
He said that from his village nearly 500 people are now residing on the highway.
