A recent video of a group of men forcefully shoving street dogs into a car has left many feeling uneasy.
But as bizarre as it may seem, dognap or dognapping - the crime of stealing a dog from its owner - is not that uncommon an act.?
Recently in Guwahati, a viral video showed a group of unknown men luring street dogs with food and then swiftly shoving them into a car.
This instance was definitely not an isolated incident. In the recent past, dognappers have been on the prowl frequently.?
In September 2022, Assam Police rescued at least 31 smuggled dogs from Bokakhat town of Assam. These dogs were stuffed into sacks and had their mouth and legs tied.?
In March of the same year, Guwahati police arrested a man identified as Rana Das for stealing a German Spitz puppy.
In December 2021, Assam Police rescued 24 canines in Jorhat that were illegally caged in the Chaguri area.?
In February of 2023, Delhi police nabbed the thief of a pet dog in Chittaranjan Park. The incident was captured on CCTV, and the man can be seen shoving the pet into a bag.?
In Hyderabad, dognapping cases were on the rise in 2021 - with at least 3-4 cases being reported to cops every month.?
The reason behind dog thefts of exotic breeds is quite simple - these dogs are resold for financial gain.?Another reason is for breeding purposes, often illegally.?
Speaking to Times of India, Pradeep Nair of Animal Warriors Conservation Society said, "Illegal breeders are specifically targeting homes in order to steal pets so that they can breed them and earn money. The breeders use stolen pedigree dogs and abandon them once they are past their breeding lifespan. Also, most of these breeding centres are not registered with the Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI) and the dogs are kept in cramped cages in dirty, deplorable conditions without any good food or veterinary care."?
Apart from this, the dog smuggling of local breeds in Assam has also been allegedly related to dog meat eating in Nagaland.
The Indian legal system has no concrete punishment for dog kidnapping.
