The Central Government has reportedly turned down a request by Premakumari, the mother of Nimisha Priya, the Indian nurse who has been sentenced to death in Yemen, to travel to the country to seek her release.
In a letter to Premakumari, the MEA urged her to reconsider her decision and stated that since India does not have a diplomatic presence in Yemen, it won't be able to facilitate her visit due to the prevailing situation in the country.
The response came after the Delhi High Court gave the Central government a week to decide on her plea seeking to travel to Yemen to save her daughter from the death penalty in that country.
Premakumari had sought that she and Nimisha Priya's daughter Mishel be allowed to travel to Yemen. She had expressed confidence that they would be able to secure Nimisha Priya in exchange for blood money to the family of Talal Abdu Mahadi, a Yemeni national.
Nimisha Priya, a nurse from Kerala's Palakkad, has been in a Yemeni jail since 2017 for the murder of Mahadi, her former business partner, who used forged documents to claim that she was his second wife.
But, according to Nimisha Priya's family, the documents were forged in 2015 to start a nursing home in Sanaa.
Mahadi, who offered to help Nimisha Priya start her nursing home, allegedly took possession of her documents and started abusing her physically and mentally.
In 2017, in an attempt to flee Mahadi and get her travel documents back, Nimisha Priya sedated him, but he died of an overdose.
Nimisha Priya, who has been in jail since has been sentenced to death for the murder, and the Yemene Supreme Court has upheld the punishment.
There are only two options in front of Nimisha Priya - seek a Presidential pardon or reach a settlement with the family of Mahadi and offer them blood money in exchange for her release.
In October, Nimisha Priya's mother had approached the Delhi High Court seeking permission to travel to Yemen to negotiate with Mahadi's family.?
Since the outbreak of the civil war in Yemen, the Indian Government has imposed a ban on its citizens visiting the country.
