Schools, colleges, and other educational institutions in Chennai have declared a holiday on Friday as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heavy rains in the Tamil Nadu capital and adjoining areas till December 9.
Three days after Cyclone Michaung made landfall, Chennai which faced the brunt of the storm is yet to fully recover from it.
Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram and Chengalpet in Tamil Nadu were the worst affected by the cyclone Michuang, which made landfall on the coast of Andhra Pradesh on Tuesday.
Some parts of Chennai which received heavy rains for days, due to the cyclone are still waterlogged.
Manali in north Chennai was among the severely affected areas. Officials said drinking water, 12,000 litres of milk, milk powder, bedsheets and food for about 15,000 people in Manali have been dispatched.
The Tamil Nadu government has already sought an interim Central relief of Rs 5,060 crore.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh who took an aerial survey and a chaired a hi-level meeting with Chief Minister M K Stalin in Chennai on Thursday said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has directed the Union Home Ministry to release Rs 450 crore, the second instalment to Tamil Nadu for cyclone relief.
The Centre has approved the first urban flood mitigation project of Rs 561.29 crore for "Integrated Urban Flood Management activities for Chennai Basin Project," under the National Disaster Mitigation Fund, which includes the Central assistance of Rs 500 crore.
According to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, the mitigation project will help make Chennai flood-resilient.
"This is the first in a series of urban flood mitigation efforts and will help develop a broader framework for urban flood management."
Earlier, CM Stalin said that a team from the Centre would soon visit the state to assess damage due to the cyclone.
He termed as 'unseen before,' the rain in Chennai and nearby areas and outlined the state's relief initiatives on war footing. In view of the government's preventive measures, loss of lives and damage has been avoided to a large extent.
The CM said relief work would continue to go on in full swing to bring normalcy in all the affected areas.?
Tamil Nadu Chief Secretary Shiv Das Meena on Thursday said 9,000 officials from other districts have been deployed in the city for relief work.
He further informed that the state government was trying to pump out stormwater from the low-lying areas.
Along with the 17 lives lost in rain-related incidents, Tamil Nadu had also suffered massive economic losses due to the flooding.
The manufacturing facilities of iPhones to automobiles in Tamil Nadu had to suspend operations due to the heavy rains and cyclone.
