Adding a new twist to the tragic death of Anjali Singh, who was hit by a car and then dragged on the road for 12 kms in Delhi's Kanjhawala on Sunday, Nidhi, a friend of hers who was with the 20-year-old at the time of the accident has revealed that the victim had consumed alcohol.
Nidhi, who sustained minor injuries after she fell on the road, had fled the scene and had remained silent about the accident in which her friend lost her life.
On Tuesday, she recorded her statement before a magistrate in connection with the incident.
Later she told the media that they were returning from a party, and Anjali, who had consumed alcohol, was driving the scooty that she had almost rammed into a truck minutes before it collided with the car.
"She had consumed a lot of alcohol. We even had a fight over who would drive the scooty. She was not at all in her senses. Before that accident, she was about to ram into a truck but I somehow managed to apply the brakes on time even as I was seated behind her... and we got saved," Nidhi said.
Earlier, the CCTV footage outside the Oyo Hotel in Rohini was also recovered by the police, where the victim and Nidhi were seen arguing just before the incident.
"I reached the hotel at 8 p.m. and we left around 2 a.m. The accident took place soon after we left the hotel," said Nidhi.
"Anjali first picked me from my house in Sultanpuri and then took me to her house in Rohini and then we went to the hotel," she added.
"I had asked her to hand me over the scooty key, but she wanted to drive. We were arguing over who will drive the scooty," said Nidhi.
She further claimed that the men in the car were aware that Anjali was stuck under the vehicle and despite her cries for help, they did not stop.
"They knew that a woman got stuck beneath the car. To get rid of her, they even moved their car back and forth, but Anjali had got entangled with some part of the car. Next morning I heard the news that she had died," Nidhi said.
Reacting to her statements, Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) chief Swati Maliwal demanded a probe against Nidhi, who ran away from the incident site and did not speak to anyone about the accident.
"Anjali's friend is telling while sitting in the LIVE show how the boys ran over Anjali in front of her and this "friend" got up from there and went to her home. What kind of friend is this? She didn't stop the boys, didn't tell the police or any of Anjali's relatives... went and sat in the house. This also needs to be investigated," Maliwal said on Twitter.??
Meanwhile, the last rites of Anjali were performed at the Shiv Puri Mukti Dham crematorium on Tuesday evening. More than 1,000 police and paramilitary forces personnel were deployed from the victim's house to the cremation ground to avoid any untoward incidents.? ?
Over 50 police vehicles escorted the ambulance where the deceased's body was taken for the final journey. However, nobody was allowed to enter the cremation ground except for the family members.?
Many people gathered outside the cremation ground, carrying placards and photos of the victim, raising 'Justice for Anjali' slogans to mark their protest against the police.
