An engineering student has been arrested by Bengaluru Police after he fatally knocked down a woman while in a drunken state. The accused, identified as Dhanush Paramesh, was arrested after his father's newly purchased Mercedes-Benz ran over a 30-year-old woman crossing the road in Kengeri.
According to the police, the 20-year-old, who is a fifth-semester engineering student at a private university in Hosakerehalli, south Bengaluru, is the son of Parameshwar, a businessman who owns a bus service called LV Travels.
On Saturday, Dhanush and his friends visited a mall near Yeshwantpur on Dr Rajkumar Road and consumed alcohol. Later, while returning, Dhanush, who was heavily intoxicated, failed to notice the speed-breaker just before the Traffic Transit Management Centre (TTMC) bus stop and drove past it at high speed.
Dhanush lost control of the vehicle and knocked down a pedestrian, Sandhya, who was crossing the road. Following the incident, Dhanush attempted to flee the scene and in the process rammed into another motorbike, injuring its rider.
The youth, however, could not escape as he had to stop at the next traffic signal, where he was apprehended by passers-by. He has been arrested and charged under BNS Section 105 for culpable homicide not amounting to murder.
Meanwhile, the victim's family claimed that the police initially tried to shield Dhanush.
"I was given a copy of the FIR only at 3 am (on Sunday). The suspect was simply sitting around, and his father visited the station three times. Police were evasive with their answers and took a long time to file the complaint," a relative of the woman told local media.
