On Friday, some 180 people, including passengers and crew members on board, the IndiGo flight 6E-2131 from Delhi to Bengaluru had the shock of their lives when a fire broke out on the aircraft's engine, as it was about to take off.
A video on Twitter showed one of the A320 aircraft's engines on fire and sparks flying at the time of taxiing at the airport.?
Priyanka Kumar, a passenger on board the flight posted a video of the incident on Twitter, that showed one of the engines on fire and sending off sparks.
"Indigo 6E-2131. Scary experience on Delhi runway! This was supposed to be a take off video but this happened," she said.
According to reports the pilot of a SpiceJet plane that was behind the IndiGo aircraft in the line up while taxiing alerted the Air Traffic Controller about the fire in the engine.?
In a statement, IndiGo said the aircraft operating flight 6E2131 from Delhi to Bengaluru experienced an engine stall during take off roll. "The take off was aborted and the aircraft safely returned to the bay. All passengers are being accommodated on an alternate aircraft," the statement said.
Delhi police officials said the control room at the airport received a call from the CISF control room regarding fire in engine of the IndiGo plane.
"At 10.08 p.m., IGIA Control Room received a call from CISF Control room regarding fire problem in engine of Flight No 6E-2131 going from Delhi to Bengaluru. The plane just started on runway for take-off. At the same time it was stopped and all the passengers were safely taken out," said an official.
Following the incident, the Ministry of Civil Aviation has ordered officials to submit a report.
"Concerned officials at @DGCAIndia have been directed to look into this and furnish a report at the earliest," the Ministry said in a tweet on Friday.
Aviation regulator DGCA on Saturday said it will take suitable follow-up action after conducting a detailed probe into the incident.
"The priority is to carry out a detailed investigation of the incident and ascertain the reasons for the fire in the engine. Fortunately, the fire was extinguished swiftly and the aircraft is now grounded," DGCA chief Arun Kumar told PTI.
He said the engine that caught fire was an IAEV2500. It is manufactured by IAE International Aero Engines AG.
"The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) will do a detailed study to check whether there have been any such incidents pertaining to these engines before. After the investigation, suitable follow-up action will be taken," he said.
A DGCA source told PTI that the aircraft VT-IFM operating flight 6E-2131 from Delhi to Bengaluru was involved in reject takeoff following engine 2 fail warning. A loud bang was heard and fire extinguisher bottle was discharged, the source added.
