In a shocking incident, two staff members of a Hyderabad-based jewellery shop were abducted, and gold and cash worth Rs 2.6 crore was robbed by them by a gang in Mumbai.
The incident happened in Sion, in Mumbai, on Wednesday when two employees of Hyderabad-based Naredi Jewellers had gone to collect finished ornaments from artisans.
As they got off their bus on Dr B A Road, near Highway Apartment, with old gold ornaments and gold biscuits, they were stopped by a group of four on an Innova.
The four men wearing police uniforms told them that they were from the Delhi Police Crime Branch and even showed them their 'ID cards'.
The men claimed they wanted to check if the gold they were carrying was legal and made them sit inside the car.
After some 'inspection', the gang told them that the gold they were carrying was illegal and that they will be taken to Delhi for further proceedings.
But after reaching an isolated spot at Bhiwandi, on Mumbai-Nashik Highway, the gang assaulted the duo and fled with their gold and cash.
According to a Police complaint filed by one of the employees, the gang fled with 20 gold biscuits weighing around 100 grams, five gold and diamond necklaces, three bracelets, two gold rings and one gold chain, Rs 27 lakh in cash in 1,350 notes of Rs 2,000 denomination and their two mobile phones, totalling worth around Rs 2.62 crore.
Based on their complaint, the Sion police have registered a case under relevant sections of impersonating as a public servant, kidnapping, robbery and other charges.
"As per the complaint, we have registered an offence against unknown persons for robbery under relevant sections of the law," DCP (Zone 4) Prashant Kadam said.
Police have reportedly detained some suspects in connection with the daylight robbery.
It is suspected that the gang may have received inside information about their movement and the gold they were carrying.
According to the complainant, staff from Hyderabad Jewellery regularly travelled to Mumbai on a bus with gold and cash meant for goldsmiths in the city.
In a similar incident, a gang posing as Income Tax department officials had stolen gold biscuits weighing 1,700 grams (1.7 kg) worth Rs 60 lakh from a jewellery shop in Hyderabad on May 27.
Following a police complaint, four gang members belonging to Maharashtra, Karnataka and Goa were arrested, while at least six more are on the run.
