Iconic Sugar Candy Brand Ravalgaon Acquired By Mukesh Ambani's Reliance

Ravalgaon, the sugar candy maker that has given some of the most nostalgic sweets brands to the 90s kids has been acquired by Reliance Consumer Products Ltd.

Ravalgaon Sugar Farm, which owns brands such as Mango Mood, Coffee Break, Tutty Fruity, Paan Pasand, Choco Cream and Supreme, has sold its trademarks, recipes, and all intellectual property rights to RCPL.

Ravalgaon Sugar Farm said its board "approved the sale, transfer and assignment of the trademarks, recipes, all intellectual property rights, including all rights, interests, and protections associated therewith, relating to the company's sugar boiled confectionery business to RCPL for a consideration of Rs 27 crore".

Difficult to sustain business

According to Ravalgaon Sugar, it has found it difficult in recent years to sustain its sugar-boiled confectionery business.

"It has lost market share owing to a surge in competition from both organised and unorganised players in this industry. At the same time, its profitability has been affected by the sustained increase in raw material, energy and labour prices, without the ability to effectively pass on the input price increases to its customers beyond the Re 1 price point," it said.

History of Ravalgaon

Ravalgaon was founded by industrialist Walchand Hirachand Doshi as an extension of his sugarcane plantations and sugar factories.

Ravalgaon Sugar Farm was started by Walchand in 1933 and its Confectionery Division was started in 1942.?

Ravalgaon started its journey with an orange-flavoured, hard-boiled sweet.

Later Ravalgaon diversified its product line to Pan Pasand which was India’s first paan-flavoured candy, Mango Mood, Coffee Break, Tutty Fruity, Supreme Toffee, Choco Cream and more, which went on to become some of the most favourite of the kids of that generation.

According to the company, all its sweets are 100 per cent vegetarian and prepared using genuine ingredients such as coffee powder, mango pulp, and fresh milk.

While the sugar candy business has been sold to Reliance, Ravalgon said that it will continue to hold all other assets such as property, land, plant, building, equipment, machinery, etc, after the completion of the proposed transaction.
