20-year-old Jyoti Chhetri has seen many battles in her young life, including on the world stage. Jyoti, who was a member of the India team that won silver in the FIH Hockey 5s Women's World Cup last month is now on an unfamiliar turf.
The rising star of Indian women's hockey is now fighting to save her house from demolition.
Jyoti who was born in Rourkela, Odisha, into a family that migrated to the state from Darjeeling has been living in a dilapidated structure they called home.
But the 'home', located inside the State Sports Hostel compound is now facing demolition for a road-widening project.
Jyoti's father Bhim Singh who had worked as a mason and a security guard had built the 'house' for his family on the government land.
The family had lived on this unauthorised land for nearly two decades, but things changed recently after they were told that they had to leave, to make way for a road project.
Though they never owned the land and knew that they could face eviction one day, the family was left shocked after authorities recently told them that their house would be demolished.
According to Singh, the family is unable to afford a new accommodation.
He also said that authorities had promised an alternative accommodation for them which is yet to be materialised.
According to reports, the District Collector of Sundargarh has also promised to help the family.
Incidentally, Jyoti's latest outing for India was on Sunday, as part of the Indian women's hockey team that took on the USA in the FIH Hockey Pro League.
India defeated the US in a shootout (2-1) in the match that took place in the Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium in Jyoti's hometown Rourkela.
