The Supreme Court of India witnessed an unusual event on Wednesday when CJI DY Chandrachud and other judges came together to congratulate the daughter of one of its employees.
Pragya Samal, the daughter of Ajay Kumar Samal, who works as a cook in the Supreme Court has received a scholarship to study for a master's in law in the US.
Pragya, a lawyer and researcher has scholarships to pursue masters in law at either the University of California or the University of Michigan in the US.
As a student at Amity Law School in Noida, she was awarded the gold medal for consistently topping the merit list in the three-year LLB course.
On Wednesday, Pragya along with her proud parents was felicitated by the judges of the SC.
¡°It is a matter of pride for all of us,¡± CJI Chandrachud said while congratulating Pragya on her achievement.
"We know Pragya has managed something on her own, but we will ensure she manages to get whatever is required... We expect that she should come back to serve the country," Justice Chandrachud said.
The CJI also gifted Pragya three books on the Indian Constitution signed by all the judges of the Supreme Court.
Pragya thanked her parents for supporting her dream to pursue a career in law.
¡°I think I am very privileged to be his child. He has helped me since my school days, and he always made sure that I get the opportunities that I should get,¡± she said.
The 25-year-old also thanked CJI Chandrachud and said that he was an inspiration for her.
"With the live streaming of court hearings, everyone can watch him (Justice Chandrachud) speaking. He encourages young lawyers and his words are like gems. He is my inspiration," she told PTI.
