SHO Ashwini Kumar of Kishanganj police station was thrashed to death in Pantapada village within Goalpokhar police station limits in West Bengal on April 10. He had gone there for a raid in connection with a motorcycle theft case. His body was brought home. On seeing him, his mother Urmila Devi collapsed and died as per The Indian Express.
The final rites of the mother-son do were performed at their ancestral village on Sunday.?
Seven Kishangan policemen, who were part of the team that went to West Bengal for the raid, have been placed under suspension for alleged dereliction of duty as they left Kumar behind and fled when the mob attacked them during the raid.?
Kishangang superintendent of police (SP) Kumar Ashish had earlier said that the SHO was killed due to lack of assistance from West Bengal Police owing to election engagements. ¡°As per CrPC provisions, a police team can conduct raids in the jurisdiction of another police station¡ Had they helped us, our officer would have been saved,¡± the report quoted the Kishangang SP as saying.?
So far, the West Bengal Police has arrested five suspects in connection with the Bihar Police officer¡¯s lynching. Three suspects were arrested on Saturday, while two others were taken into custody on Sunday.?
