Under pressure from the opposition and general public, the Uttar Pradesh Police was forced to act and filed an FIR against Sengar and his associates.
The BJP which was shielding Sengar for nearly two years was also forced to act and expelled him from the party.?
The rape case dates back to 2017 when the complainant was 17 years old. She had accused Sengar of sexually assaulting her when she had gone to his Unnao home with a relative, to seek a job. The case first made headlines, only a year later after the girl and her mother attempted self-immolation outside the house of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.
The family had also alleged that the complainant's father was arrested by police and tortured to death in custody. Another man, who witnessed the custodial torture of the father also died under suspicious circumstances.
