A video has gone viral showing an auto driver harassing a bike taxi driver in Bengaluru.
According to reports, the incident happened on Monday near the Indira Nagar metro station in Bengaluru.
In the video that has gone viral, the auto driver can be seen stopping a Rapido bike driver, who looks like a person from the North East.
The auto driver snatched the Rapido bike taxi driver's helmet and smashed it on the ground in a fit of rage.
He then goes on a rant about how bike taxis are a threat to auto drivers like him and goes on to call the Rapido driver as someone from another country.
"Friends, take a look at how the illegal Rapido business is happening. This fellow has come from other country and drives around like a king. You should understand how spoilt auto department has become and how badly the department is getting treated. He is from some other country, but has come to pick up a girl despite having a white number plate," the auto driver said.
After the video of the incident, which a passer-by shot, went viral, the Bengaluru Police said an investigation has been launched and strict action will be taken.
Auto drivers had been at loggerheads with bike taxis in Bengaluru ever since the service started in the Karnataka capital.
The auto drivers have accused 'illegal bike taxis', which operate at much lower fares, of eating into their income.
Things have taken ugly turns several times in the past with arguments, attractions and auto drivers even threatening those booking bike taxis.
In February 2022, after continued protests by auto drivers' unions, the Karnataka transport department launched a massive crackdown on bike taxis in Bengaluru, seizing hundreds of two-wheelers in a day.
In December 2022, the Karnataka government allowed e-bike taxi operations in the city under the Karnataka Electric Bike Taxi Scheme. The scheme was introduced in 2021, primarily aiming at first and last-mile connectivity from metro stations, bus stands, and short-distance travel.?
In January, the department fixed ?25 for the first 5 km and ?50 from 5 km to 10 km for e-bike taxis.?
Auto drivers have also opposed this and have threatened to launch a massive protest if the service is allowed.
