A couple from Turkmenistan, who are in Gurugram for their daughter¡¯s treatment at a private hospital, lost $7,000 (about Rs 5.03 lakh) to two cons posing as cops on Thursday.
Shukur Shukuro and his wife were walking towards Medanta hospital ¡ª where their daughter is undergoing treatment ¡ª from a PG, where they have put up in Section 38, when two men in plainclothes intercepted them around 4pm. The men, claiming to be cops, asked the couple to show their Visas and passports.

Unsuspecting, the couple handed them their travel documents. The cons, in the meantime, emptied their handbag which had $7,000 in cash. As the cons walked off and got into a Honda City parked a few yards away, the couple realised the money was missing. They immediately called police, but in vain. Based on Shukuro¡¯s complaint, an FIR has been registered under sections 379 (theft) and 420 (cheating) of the IPC at Sadar police station.
Police claimed to have recovered footage from the CCTV cameras installed nearby, and suspect involvement of a gang that had been active in the city for the past few months and cheated a number of foreigners following a similar modus operandi.
¡°We have got some vital clues. We are on the job and the accused will be behind bars soon,¡± said ASI Shiv Kumar, the investigating officer.
In October, an Iraqi national, Hussein Abdul Ameer Ali, was cheated of $1,000 by four men, who posed as policemen and took out the money from his bag while checking his passport.
In July, another Iraqi national was robbed of $3,000 by two men near Medanta hospital.
